Step one accomplished. After dispatching Salem in two straight games
last week, the 19-6 Nanih Waiya fast-pitch softball team is set to
take on Sebastopol this week in the second round of the MHSAA Class
1A State Softball Playoffs.
Nanih Waiya swept past Salem 9-0 and 3-1, setting up a 6 p.m. visit
to Sebastopol on Thursday. Game two of the series will be at Nanih
Waiya at 5 p.m. on Saturday, with the if necessary game scheduled for
7 p.m.
In last Thursday’s 9-0 road win over Salem the Lady Warriors banged
out 16 hits and scored in all but one inning.
Marlee Parkes ripped a pair of doubles and a single to lead NW at the
plate, while Bridget Hunt, Kara Lane Nowell and Reagan Holdiness had
a single and double each for the winners.
Megan Robinson and Kaytlyn Burrage contributed two singles each for
the Lady Warriors, while Brantlie Sheets, Mackenzie Johnson and Ryan
Holdiness each had a single. Reagan Holdiness drove in two runs, with
Hunt, Nowell and Ryan Holdiness each collecting an RBI.
Ryan Holdiness picked up the win on the mound, striking out nine
while allowing just one walk and five hits.
In Friday’s second game of the series Nanih Waiya scored first with
two runs in the bottom of the third, then held on for the 3-1 win.
Sheets was the winning pitcher, striking out six without a walk and
allowing just four singles.
Ryan Holdiness bashed a pair of doubles and a single for the winners,
while Nowell had a single and double and Sheets had a pair of
singles. Reagan Holdiness and Mackenzie Johnson each singled for NW,
while Nowell and Ryan Holdiness each had an RBI.
