Tigers lose two tough ones in region tourney

By Austin Bishop Winston County Journal After a pair of one-point losses, the Noxapater High School boys basketball team was set to head to Dexter High School on Tuesday night for the opening round of the MHSAA Class 1A State Basketball Tournament. If Noxapater beat Dexter on Tuesday night they would then advance to the South State Tournament at West Lincoln on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers opened the Region 5-1A Tournament at French Camp Academy on Tuesday by dropping a 53-52 decision to West Lowndes. The game was tight throughout with the teams being tied at 11-11 at the end of one quarter and West Lowndes holding a 25-23 lead at the half. Noxapater cut it to 37-36 after three quarters of play then rallied to tie the game at 46-46 at the end of regulation before dropping the game by one in overtime. Jermaine Thomas scored 14 points to lead West Lowndes while Wendell Rieves added 12. No scorers were reported for Noxapater. The Tigers then moved on to take on Ethel in the consolation game on Friday night to determine the third and fourth seeds. Noxapater built a 37-30 lead at the half over Ethel and then led 52-39 going into the fourth quarter. However, EHS rallied to outscore Noxapater 28-14 in the fourth quarter and take a 67-66 win. Markei Johnson tossed in 28 points for Ethel, while Bobby Potts and Ladarius Erving scored 14 each. No scorers were reported for Noxapater.
