The Friends of Legion State Park are encouraging every citizen to use Legion State Park in the upcoming year to help insure its continued operation.
“As the recession continues it is becoming difficult for the State of Mississippi to keep all 25 parks,” stated Kline Shepherd, a Friends of Legion State Park volunteer in charge of annual permit sales. “Each Park is held accountable for showing a certain amount of viability.”
Shepherd and the other members of the Friends of Legion State Park explained that each person can do their part to help keep Legion State Park as a viable and well used park. The Friends of the park encourage everyone to: schedule and rent the historic lodge for an upcoming birthday, anniversary or any special event; purchase an annual entrance permit which is $42 for a year and is good for all parks in the state; and plan a special weekend at the park maybe with a cabin rental.
The Friends of Legion State Park hope to sell 250 park usage permits as part of the campaign to make Legion State Park a successful and a well visited park.
The historic lodge which can rented for events is a part of the National Register of Historic places and was built in the 1930’s as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The lodge is made of hand hewn timber and rock construction with vaulted ceilings and illustrates the architectural and skilled craftsmanship of the CCC.
The park along with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is also offering a Hunter’s Special for the months of December 2012 through February 2013. Discounted rates are available for certain cabins and RV sites with the verification of a valid Mississippi hunting license and Wildlife Management Area User Permit.
