Relay for Life of Winston County will have its 2013 kickoff at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Winston Medical Center Cafeteria.
The event marks the start of the Relay for Life season and is an effort to recruit families, caregivers, cancer survivors, businesses and other organizations to support the largest fundraiser in the fight against cancer.
The Winston Mdical Center will once again sponsor a teamn for the event.
The Winston MedicalCenter has played a role in the Relay for Life in WinstonCounty since its inception.
This year WMC is hosting the kick off meeting and its Relay Team is alreayd off to a great start.
“We (WMC Relay Team) kicked off our fundraising efforts with the children’s carnival at the WMC health fair. It was a good start toward our team fundraising goal,” stated Elaine Porter, WMC Relay team member.
The WMC Team has also started fundraising in November with a krispy kreme donut sale.
The WMC team will host a bake sale November 16 in the front hospital lobby from 7:30 a.m. until. There will be a variety of delicious pastries from the Old Country Bakery in Brooksville.
There will also be homemade baked goods such as fried apple pies donated by Mary Lou’s Biscuit Bar. There will also be a variety of cakes and pies, brownies, cupcakes, and much more The WMC Relay Team is also planning other fundraisers and will notify of upcoming events.
“Thanks to the community that has contributed to our fundraising efforts. The money raised goes toward a very important cause. We couldn’t do it without the help of the community,” said Porter.
Porter encouraged all interested persons to attend the kickoff meeting and get involved in the fight against cancer.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an overnight community celebration where teams collect donations and take turns walking or running around a track relay-style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants light luminary candles around the track to honor cancer survivors as well as remembering those lost to the disease. The 2013 Winston County event is set for Friday, May 17 at Louisville High School.
The goal of the kick-off party is the creation of at least 25 teams and to gain volunteers for the Relay for Life event and fundraising,
