How sweet it is!! The Winston Patriots ended a 3 game losing streak last Friday night in Yazoo City by defeating district opponent Manchester, by a score of 42-0.
In a game that saw the Patriots facing a do or die situation, they arose to the occasion by dominating the now, 2-3 Mavericks from the opening kickoff. Winston caused 3 first half turnovers, that lead to their 35-0 halftime lead.
Last week, the Patriots were on the end of the turnover show as they committed 5 turnovers in their first 5 possessions. The Patriots jumped out quick on their opening drive to put points up when Zach Taylor scored his first of 4 touchdowns of the night.
Likewise, Gage Graham added his first of 6 PAT kicks to put Winston up 7-0. A following Maverick fumble set up another score from Taylor, who helped start the drive at the Manchester 23 yard line, to end it from 3 yards out. After Graham’s point after, the Patriots had a 14-0 lead with 8:237 left in the opener.
Manchester then had a bad snap from center on a punt attempt and Winston took over at the Maverick 35. Orien Dailey would then get his chance at scoring as he raced around the end for a 15 yard touchdown, with Graham adding the PAT.
As Winston took their 21-0 lead into the start of the second quarter, this score changed quickly as Zach Taylor added more points on his 2 yard touchdown run. Grahams point after made it a 28-0 game with 11:30 left before halftime.
Manchester’s problems continued as Carter Lane Jones gathered in his first of 2 interceptions of the night and raced 60 yards. But a penalty nullified the run and the Patriots took over at their own 21 yard one.
A Winston 4th down attempt fell short and the Mavericks took over at their 34 yard line with 5:13 left before half. Jones then gathered in his second interception of the night on a diving leap and Winston took over at their own 35 yard line with 2:49 before intermission.
Winston would then add the “run clock-run points” when Orien Dailey took in over from the 2 yard line and Gage Graham added the 35th point of the night to send the teams into halftime with Winston on top 35-0.
After a Manchester punt on the first series of the second quarter, Winston added the final points of the night when Zach Taylor crossed the goal line for the 4th time of the night. Gage Graham went 100% for the night on the PAT’s as he kicked his 6th of the night to send the final score to 42-0.
With many substitutions seeing action in the second half, it was a promising sight to see the talented young Patriots that will be filling the positions in the near future.
Offensively, Zach Taylor lead the scoring and rushing with 4 touchdowns and 128 yards rushing. Logan Webb fell only 1 yard short of the 100 yard barrier with his 99 yards on the ground, while Orien Dailey finished with 2 rushing touchdowns and 51 yards rushing. Gage Graham continued to show his kicking skills as he went 6 for 6 in the PAT department. Webb also passed for 52 yards with his leading yardage receiver being Miles Johnson with 39 yards.
Defensively, Sam Dempsey and Will Moody led the charge with 6 stop each. Ty Thompson, Zach Taylor, and Brock Baker each had 4 tackles. Carter Lane Jones was credited with 2 interceptions.
So as the Patriots will face a busy week with homecoming activities taking place, they will stay focused,as always strong, Wayne travels to Patriot Field.
A beautiful homecoming court and a Patriot victory could make this a special week. Game time is set for 7:00.
