The Louisville Aldermen were encouraged to play a role in the Winston County Partners for Community Living in order to help push forward the Excel By 5 program.
Excel By 5 is a designated to boost crucial early-childhood learning in a community. Excel By 5 certification program is designed to encourage and assist communities in active support of young children and their families.
“This is strictly a Mississippi Program,” said Rita Tanksley of the WCPCL and Mississippi State Extension Office. “This program is a community-driven effort to help children birth to age 5.”
Tanksley noted the importance of getting city leaders involved as well as parents of children in the community.
“This program emphasis the importance of parents involvement,” said Tanksley.
The aldermen noted their support of the efforts for the positive program in the community.
On another positive note, the aldermen reviewed the sales tax figures for the month noting a continued increase of last year and what they hope is a continuing trend. Louisville is up Louisville registered a $13,000 increase over last year in the sales tax figures and 2012 has had an increase every single month over 2011.
City Clerk Babs Fulton encouraged residents to continue shopping at home and keeping those local sales taxes working for the community.
In other business, the aldermen: • discussed the sale of the Louisville Brick Company property. • approved a proclamation honoring Karen Davis: Davis who started working for the city in March 1998 had to resign in June 2012 due to her battle with cancer. The proclamation recognized her courteous manner, the positive impact on those lives she touched, and efforts to continue working even though she was battling cancer. • Recognized audit completionand approved audit payment. Alderman Caperton noted the yearly increase in the audit cost. • Reviewed two unclean properties with one already cleaned and the other given 30 days to clean. • Attached a lien on a property recently cleaned by the city. • Discussed the sidewalk replacement bids for Church Street. Quotes were expected last Thursday. • Approved Training classes for LFD, LPD, and budget training for clerk’s office. • Discussed budget hearing dates.
The next regular meeting is set for Tuesday, August 7, 2012.
