Guardsman promoted to lt. colonel

JACKSON, Miss.— Robert J. McWhirter of Ocean Springs, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Mississippi National Guard here July 17, 2012.

Brig. Gen. Mitch Brown, the Assistant Adjutant General, Mississippi Army National Guard, and Mrs. Angela McWhirter pinned the new rank on McWhirter. Brown also spoke to those attending the ceremony about McWhirter’s military service.

McWhirter began his military career in the Army Reserve at Starkville, Miss. He then attended Mississippi State University where he was commissioned through the Army ROTC Program in 1990 and into the Mississippi National Guard as an aviator. He served in several positions in the 185th Aviation Battalion, which included platoon leader, company executive officer, and as company commander, battalion operations officer and executive officer. He deployed to Kosovo in 2007 as the operations officer of the 1st battalion, 185th Aviation located in Tupelo.

His last assignment was with the MSARNG Recruiting and Retention Battalion where he served as the recruiting company commander, operations officer, and battalion deputy commander. His current assignment is as the executive officer of the 1108th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group in Gulfport, Miss.

Lt. Col. McWhirter is a 1985 graduate of Louisville High School, Louisville, Miss., and earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Mississippi State University 1991. He is the son of Bobby and Pat McWhirter of Louisville, and is married to the former Angela Henderson of Clinton, Miss. The McWhirters have three children, son, Brad, a private first class in the MSARNG, and daughters Rosemary and Anna Lauren.
