The Relay for Life organizers recently held Bank night on May 24.

“We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to this terrible disease!,” said Brandi Krajewski, Relay Co-chair. “I hope that every citizen in Winston County realizes the importance of this event and comes to Relay against cancer. “

Any businesses, churches, civic and service clubs, families and individuals are invited to join in the Relay for Life by sponsoring a team to walk in the Relay or by sponsoring a community event and fund- raiser for the American Cancer Society.

A team can be anything from a small group of friends to a huge group of co-workers. The goal for each team member to raise $100. Team participation ranges from simply participating in the walking event to arranging fundraising events for the team. “Fighting cancer is a team effort and the strength of support from the people of Winston County for a common cause is powerful! We just need participation,” said Krajewski.

Relay for Life is a family-oriented team event where participants walk relay-style around a track and take part in fun activities off the track. The Winston County event will feature a Survivors’ Lap, a Caregivers’ Lap, competitions, entertainment, music and lots of food. A Luminaria Ceremony will be held to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who lost their battles with the disease.

This year, the Relay Committee is offering two new options to raise funds for Relay night. One, they have torches that can be lit in honor or memory of someone.

“We will place his or her name on the torch and it will burn throughout the night,” said Krajewski.

Second, they are taking pre-orders on sky lanterns. They will light the laterns either before or after the luminary service and they will be able to see the lanters float into the sky.

“What a beautiful experience,” said Krajewski.

The torches can be purchased for $100 and the sky lanterns are $25. To preorder either any of these call 662-803-4039 or 662-779-5111. The Relay Committee will have a booth at the Red Hills Art Festival where citizens can do a pre order as well.

“Time is coming near and we need the support of our citizens,” added Krajewski.

Relay for Life will be held on June 8, 2012 at Louisville High School Football field
