ECCC Kids’ College scheduled for the summer

A Spa Kamp for ages 5-15 on June 26 and 27 kicks off the 2012 Kids’ College Program at East Central Community College in Decatur. Activities for ages 5-12 continue through the month of July with classes ranging from athletics to cake decorating and law enforcement.

The registration fee is $40 per class or $30 for two or more classes (per student) and each participant receives a T-shirt. Marcie Pinson serves as Kids’ College director.

“We are excited about this year’s Kids College, which offers a variety of classes that participants will enjoy. We had a great turnout last year andare looking forward to a larger one this year!” Pinson said.

Course offerings include the following: June 26-27 Spa Kamp- 8:30 a.m. to Noon; Ages 5-9, Tuesday, June 26; ages 10-15, Wednesday, June 27. Students will learn the steps of a guided facial, have their hair washed and styled, have their nails painted and receive a foot bath and pedicure. ECCC cosmetology instructors Wanda Brackeen and Carla Jacome-Cluff will supervise the day’s activities and cosmetology students will perform procedures.

July 2-6 Little Warrior Tennis: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 to noon. Participants will learn and practice basic grips for hand and back-hand strokes, and how to serve and volley. Pete Mazella will serve as instructor. Little Warrior Football: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9-12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn skills needed to pass, score, catch and kick while mastering offensive and defensive plays. Web Hamilton, ECCC assistant football coach, will provide instruction.

Scrapbooking: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 to noon. Participants will learn how to turn pictures into cherishable keepsakes. Renee Boggan will serve as instructor.

July 9-13 Little Warrior Baseball: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 to noon. Participants learn various skills including pitching, hitting, catching and running, along with offensive and defensive plays. Justin Brewer, ECCC assistant baseball coach will provide instruction.

Little Warrior Soccer: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9-12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn the techniques of dribbling, passing, defending and scoring. ECCC soccer coach Kenneth Thompson will serve as instructor.

Drawing/Painting: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 to noon. Participants will learn basic drawing and painting techniques and learn to use a variety of different art utensils. Ben Wall will provide instruction.

Jr. Police Academy: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9-12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn the duties and responsibilities of a law enforcement officer. Deputy Mark Spence will serve as instructor.

Crafty Creations: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9-12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will create different crafts and enjoy art forms such as self-portraits, finger painting, picture frames and more. Chafony Poole will provide instruction.

July 16-20 Little Warrior Softball: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9 -12, 10:30 to noon. Participants will learn the skills needed to pitch, hit, catch and run, along with offensive and defensive plays. Kristin Chaney, ECCC assistant softball coach, will provide instruction.

EC’s House of Cakes: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn the proper way of frosting a cake and how to work with decorating tools to create borders, flowers and other designs. Renea Savell will serve as instructor.

Little Warrior Cheerleading: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn cheers and stunts. ECCC cheerleader Katie Reeves will provide instruction.

Little Warrior Basketball: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will receive instruction in the areas of dribbling, passing, shooting and offensive and defensive plays. ECCC head coach Bill Smith will serve as instructor.

July 23-27 CSI: Decatur: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9 -12, 10:30 to noon. Participants will learn to collect and process evidence of a mock crime scene. Deputy Mark Spence will provide instruction.

Dance Into Shape: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9 -12, 10:30 to noon. Participants will have fun dancing to the latest music while getting healthy with exercising. Debra Payton will serve as instructor.

Accessory Designing: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn the art of making and designing accessories such as bracelets, necklaces, hair bows and other hair accessories and earrings. Sharon Miller will provide instruction.

Guitar: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn the parts of the guitar, finger boarding, the use of strings and tuning keys. ECCC adjunct instructor Barry Hause will provide instruction.
