The Nanih Waiya Warriors made a huge step in capturing back-to-back state championships this past week by defeating Natchez Cathedral to claim the South State Championship. The first game of their playoff series took place on Thursday, May 10 in Nanih Waiya. The Warriors would come out red-hot as they found themselves with a 3-0 lead after three innings of play. The Warriors would add another run to their lead in the fifth inning, making the score 4-0 going into the sixth inning. Cathedral would get their only two runs of the game in the sixth inning. The Warriors would go on to capture a 4-2 victory, and up 1-0 in the overall series. The second game of the series took place in Natchez on May 11. This time, it was the Green Wave who would jump out early as they went up 3-0 after three innings of play. Down but not out, the Warriors would make a stand in the fourth inning, putting up three runs to tie the game at 3-3 going into the fifth inning. Cathedral would take the lead in the sixth inning, giving the Warriors another chance to tie or take the lead. Nanih Waiya would not be able to get the lead or tie, and Cathedral would go on to win 4-3 and tie the series at a game each. The third game of the series took place back in Nanih Waiya on May 14. In similar fashion as the previous game, the Green Wave jumped out to a lead, scoring two runs in the first inning alone. The Warriors would not wait long to mount a comeback, however, as they came back to take the lead 4-3 going into the fourth inning. Cathedral would not score any more runs for the rest of the game as the Warriors went on to clinch the win and the series to advance to play for the Class 1A State Championship Game. The Warriors will face Greenville St. Joe for the Class 1A State Championship beginning Wednesday, May 16. The games will take place at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. The first game will be at 1 p.m. The second will follow Friday, May 18 at 1 p.m.
